Tell us about the room. A few sentences and a couple of photos are enough for us to know whether this is a two day backsplash or a full shower rebuild, and we will tell you which one it is.
What happens when you reach us
The first conversation is short and practical. We want to know which room, roughly how big it is, and what is going wrong or what you want changed. If it is a shower, we ask whether water is showing up anywhere it should not, in the ceiling below, on the hall floor outside the door, or as a musty smell that will not clear. If it is a floor, we ask whether it is cracking, lifting, or just dated. If it is a backsplash, we mostly ask about the range, the window, and the outlets, because those three decide the layout. Nothing about this call is a hard sell. Half the time we end up telling somebody their tile is fine and the real problem is a bad bead of caulk or a fan that never worked.
Photos help more than anything. A wide shot of the whole room, a close shot of the failure, and one of the floor at the doorway will tell us most of what we need. If you have the room measurements, share them, but a rough guess is fine and we will verify on site anyway. It also helps to know a few things about your house. When was it built, has the bathroom been redone before, is there a basement under the floor in question, and is the shower the only one in the house. That last answer changes how we sequence the work, because we do not want a Dearborn family showering at a relative's place for two weeks if we can avoid it.
After the call we set a time to come look. Most visits take half an hour. We measure, check for movement underfoot, look for water staining in the basement below a bathroom, and open a small area if something needs confirming. Then you get a written scope by email, usually within a few days, listing the work in order, the prep we are including, the material allowance, and what would count as an extra. We go over it by phone so nothing reads as jargon. When you are ready, we put a start date on the calendar and send a simple agreement. No pressure to sign on the spot, and the scope stays good while you think it over or get a second opinion from someone else in town.
Scheduling has a few Dearborn realities baked into it. Street parking on some of the older blocks is tight, so we will ask where the truck and the trailer can sit for the run of the job. We need water access and a working outlet near the room, plus a spot outside for the wet saw with a path we can cover. Winter changes things. If your driveway ices over we salt our own path in, and if a storm shuts the city down we call you rather than making you wonder. Pets get accounted for in the plan, doors stay closed, and if you work days we can arrange access without you burning a vacation day to let us in.
When the tile is set, the room is not instantly ready and we will not pretend otherwise. Thinset and grout need time to cure, and rushing a shower back into service is the fastest way to ruin new work. We give you a plain timeline. Stay off the floor this long, no water in the shower until this day, seal the grout after this many weeks if we used cement grout. We show you how to clean it, which usually means warm water and something mild rather than the harsh stuff under your sink. Salt season is the one to watch on an entry floor, so we tell you what to do in January to keep the grout from taking a beating.
The last thing worth saying is how we handle surprises, because in houses of this age there usually is one. Rotten blocking behind a tub. A drain that is not where the original plans suggested. A previous repair done with construction adhesive and hope. When we find something, work stops in that spot, we photograph it, and we call you with the options and what each one means for the schedule. You decide. We never quietly tile over a problem to keep a date, and we never spring the cost of a fix on you at the end. That habit has cost us a couple of jobs and kept us a lot of customers.
